In 2003/2004, Prince Edward Island Rotary Clubs collectively raised $150,000, one half of the budget required for the Upper Room Soup Kitchen building on Richmond Street in Charlottetown. At the time, the Rotary Club of Stratford was just over a year old and did not have the same financial reserves as some of the more established clubs.
As a result, Stratford members committed 'sweat equity' in lieu of cash. This 'sweat equity' included painting, cleaning and landscaping. In November 2005, using a design provided by Charlottetown Area Development Corporation Landscape Architect Ernie Morello, members completed the first phase of the landscaping. Many of the shrubs used were provided by Stratford members and the ground was prepared for further additions. The second phase, preparing the back area of the building, was begun in September 2006.
